Fifty years of Title IX

In observation of National Suicide Awareness and Prevention throughout September, the Division of Student Affairs at TAMUG hosted multiple events to help educate students and raise campus community awareness about rates of assault and suicide among college students and how

The first of these events was this year’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX on Sept. 9, preceding National Suicide awareness day on September 10. Members of Student Affairs arranged a presentation displaying information and a brief history of the making of Title IX.

At the event, Joe Hoff, a member of Student Affairs and director of campus recreation, stated to the Nautilus, “We put this together hoping to help educate students on how to prevent and take action against acts of discrimination and sexual assault and that type of behavior…and increase awareness of the statistic prevalence of this type of activity in the beginnings of fall semesters throughout college campuses.”

The Division of Student Affairs also hosted multiple Coffee with a Counselor events. For these events, students were invited to have a free cup of coffee and become acquainted with TAMUG’S campus counselors and their counseling services.

Dr. Dana Little, access coordinator and counselor with TAMUG’s Counseling, Career and Ability Services, shared a few words with the Nautilus at an event on Sept. 21, describing how attending Coffee with a Counselor is beneficial to both students and staff. “I think it really humanizes the counselors to students,” she stated, “they have a chance to talk to the counselors like normal, regular people… It really helps just connect people on campus, and students can see we have a whole office of people wanting to listen.”

As Suicide Awareness Month came to a close, the final event held on campus was the Wall of Hope activity on Sept. 29. This event was hosted in the Flag Room and designed to help students become acquainted with TAMUG’s connections to the American Association for Suicide Prevention, as well as to encourage students to reflect on and share things that inspire their hope and gratitude.
