Dr. Khan's paper has been awarded the Third Prize Paper Award for 2023 by the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. The award was presented during the IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and the IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, held in Phoenix, Arizona.
The paper focuses on optimizing the placement of charging stations (CS) to minimize their impact on the electrical distribution system while considering investment costs and accessibility for plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) users. The study also incorporates renewable energy sources (RES) to reduce grid energy demand and reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, energy management systems (EMS) are introduced to balance peak and valley power demands.
Using a hybrid particle swarm optimization and grey wolf optimization method, the study determined the optimal sites for CS installations, minimizing costs related to CS setup, energy losses in the distribution network, and travel costs for PEV users. The proposed method demonstrated superior results compared to existing approaches and achieved optimal placement of CS and photovoltaic distributed generation (DG) in the IEEE-33 distribution system. Furthermore, the implementation of EMSs, combined with a battery storage system (BSS) located at DG sites, reduced additional energy loss by up to 113.4% and peak power demand by up to 16%.
