CALS Programs Overview    

Academic Advising

Academic Advising assists with curricular navigation needs, such as:

  • Major advising for all programs within the College of Marine Sciences and Maritime Studies
  • General advising for any students on the Galveston Campus
  • General Academics program
  • Student degree planning and course registration
  • Graduation clearance
  • Transfer course equivalency & course adjustments
  • Academic enrichment opportunities (research, internships, etc)

Academic Coaching

Academic Coaching assists with curricular navigation needs, such as:

  • Academic soft skill development (time management, study strategies, goal setting, etc)
  • Early intervention for academic improvement
  • Probationary student support
  • General support for academic development needs

Content Support

Content support (such as tutoring) assists with content mastery for targeted courses through programs such as:

  • Course Support - small group tutoring for individuals that want to achieve their highest potential within a course
  • Guided Group Study - large group sessions aimed at developing ongoing peer-consultant-led group study sessions
  • Connections to broader institutional support - course support can also help you get connected to other campus tutoring programs, as well as College Station based resources like the Virtual Math Learning Center

Developmental Education (TSI)

Developmental Education supports students who are indicated not college ready through the TSI assessment. Supports include:

  • Assistance with TSI-related questions, including score and exemption processing
  • Advising and course placement for developmental education
  • Ongoing coaching and academic support throughout the developmental education program

General Academics

General Academics is a program for students who are working on a transition between majors. It can assist with situations such as:

  • Departmental or major dismissal
  • Working to meet pre-reqs for entry to a desired major
  • Unsure of major plans and hoping to explore options

F1RST Program

The F1RST Program supports first generation college students, including providing resources such as:

  • Community connection opportunities such as The F1RST Living Learning Community, F1RST Hullabaloo U, and F1RST Grant Community
  • Social events open to all first-gen students
  • First Gen Lounge spaces open to all first-gen students
  • Targeted academic coaching and workshops

Hullabaloo U

Hullabaloo U helps new students transition to college, providing resources such as:

  • A small group cohort of incoming students that meet weekly
  • A dedicated staff or faculty instructor
  • A peer mentor who connects consistently with the cohort
  • Common topics such as academic success strategies, campus resources, wellbeing, and academic advising
